
Bridge/Canal Street closure
The Blackstone Department of Public Works is advising neighboring North Smithfield residents that Canal Street and the Bridge Street bridge will be closed for three weeks starting today, Monday, May 19. The roadway from Main Street to St. Paul Street will be closed for construction with detours in place. Those hoping to access the Greenway/bike path parking area can do so from St. Paul Street.

Water meeting
The Rhode Island Department of Health and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management will visit North Smithfield High School for a community meeting on the topic of PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in drinking water on Monday, May 19 in the auditorium of the school at 412 Greenville Road from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Those with private wells throughout northern Rhode Island are encouraged to attend and learn about resources available to protect their homes including an emerging contaminant grant program. Both sampling and remediation are funded by the EPA grant and will not cost anything for the private well owners.
The meeting will include a question and answer session and no registration is needed to attend.
Pantry dates
The North Smithfield Food Pantry has announced that pickup dates in May will take place on Tuesdays, May 20 and 27 starting at 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays, May 24 and 31 starting 10 a.m.
The Food Pantry is open to North Smithfield residents who must have a photo ID and a bill that confirms their address. Guests can attend the pantry all open dates each month at the Slatersville Congregational Church UCC on the Common.
For the month of May, the pantry is seeking donations of Campbell soup, spaghetti sauce, and macaroni & cheese.

Health Fair
North Smithfield Elementary School at 2214 Providence Pike will hold a Health Fair on Thursday, May 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with vendors, wellness products and services, fitness activities and exercise demos. The event is free and open to the community.

Memorial Day
Town Hall will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, and trash and recycling pick up will be delayed by one day for remainder of the week. There will be no yard waste pick up on the Saturday, May 31.
The LeClair Kozlik Logan Bassett VFW Post 6342 will also hold its annual Memorial Day Parade starting at 10:30 a.m. The parade will feature the North Smithfield High School band, police and fire departments, Boy Scout troops, town officials, and veterans. The parade will proceed from Brigidos Market down North Main Street to the Memorial Town Building, where VFW officials will conduct a Memorial ceremony at 11 a.m. The parade will then continue down School Street and end at the pavilion behind Lindy’s Tavern at 98 School St. Following the parade, the VFW will offer a free collation at the pavilion.
