BURRILLVILLE – Six Burrillville kids went home with cash prizes last week in a contest to design a poster that would help to educate the community about energy conservation and recycling.

More than 112 posters were submitted, and 12 of the designs were chosen for a calendar set to come out next year.

Faith Aldrich won the first place prize in the energy conservation designs.

The contest, held annually in a collaboration between Jesse Smith Memorial Library, the Burrillville Parks & Recreation Department, and the former Pascoag Utility District – now known as the Clear River Electric & Water District – was open to town residents in grades K through 5.

An awards ceremony was held at the library on Tuesday, May 13.

“We want to congratulate all the artists and poster creators tonight,” said the children’s librarian at a ceremony for the parents and winners.

The twelve artists each received certificates, along with goodie bags and a voucher for a free book from Jesse Smith. The top three artists in two categories – energy saving and recycling – also received cash prizes of $20, $30 or $50.

Peggy Dudley, a member of the Friends of Jesse Smith, provided funds for the recycling winners, with the first place prize won by Scarlett Preservati, second by Bridget Dybala and third by Evelyn Konnerth.
