NORTH SMITHFIELD – North Smithfield Fire & Rescue Service is warning local business owners of an ongoing scam where individuals falsely claim to represent the local fire department in effort to sell fire safety equipment.
According to Fire Chief David Chartier, business owners are told that an inspection is scheduled to take place soon and that they must purchase three fire extinguishers and three smoke detectors. Victims are told that the items are going to be shipped via FedEx, and that they must make three separate payments using Bitcoin in order to “pass the inspection.”

“This is a scam,” noted Chartier. “Fire prevention bureaus in Rhode Island never sell fire safety equipment.”
The warning comes after one local business owner fell victim to the scam over Memorial Day weekend.
Chartier offered the following information and tips to locals to help avoid such scams:
- No fire department will demand payment via cryptocurrency.
- Fire safety equipment is not sold directly through local fire departments.
- Legitimate inspections are always scheduled through official communication and include proper identification.
If you are contacted with a similar request:
- Do not send any money or provide personal information.
- Report the incident immediately to your local police department.
- For any questions or concerns, contact your local fire department and speak directly with the fire marshal.
“Stay vigilant and help spread the word to protect our community,” Chartier said.
Ask for a ID and take a picture of it and the person. A con will run.
