BURRILLVILLE – Police responding to a call for shots fired on Tarkiln Road received an unpleasant greeting Thursday morning when the man who answered the door pointed a loaded gun at an officer, according to a release for Col. Stephen Lynch.

Nicholas Smith, 40, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, discharging a firearm within a compact area, simple assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest following the incident.

Officers reported to the area of 1425 Tarkiln Road at 8:36 a.m. on Thursday, July 3 and knocked on the rear door of the home, according to the release.

“Smith opened the door and confronted the first officer he saw, Officer Kelley, and instantly pointed a loaded 9 mm handgun within inches of her face,” the release notes. “Officer Kelley was instinctively able to push Smith’s arm that was holding the firearm up and away from her face, pull the gun from his hand and disarm him.”

Smith was reportedly taken to the ground and secured in handcuffs by Kelley and two other officers on the scene.

Police say Smith showed obvious signs of heavy intoxication, was taken into custody and returned to Burrillville Police Headquarters. He will be charged later today in Sixth District Court.
