GLOCESTER — The Rhode Island Department of Health recommended closing the swimming area at the George Washington Campground just ahead of the July 4 holiday.
RIDOH cited high bacteria counts in the water in the recommendation for the Chepachet campground in a notice on Thursday, July 3.
“RIDOH will continue to monitor and review beach water quality through Labor Day,” the department said. “The status of a beach may change as new data become available.”
During a beach closure, RIDOH has determined that the water is not safe for swimming or other activities, but the beach facility itself remains open to the public.
