BURRILLVILLE – A man who served his town for decades with volunteer and leadership positions in town fire departments has died at the age of 54.
Augustine W. “Gus” Eddy II died peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Overlook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pascoag according to his obituary with Cartier’s Funeral Home.
Eddy, the son of Muriel M. (Remillard) Deshaies of Blackstone, Mass., his late father Augustine H. Eddy, and his stepfather Richard G. Deshaies of Woonsocket, worked for several Burrillville fire departments, serving as chief in Nasonville from 2007 to 2017.
Born in Woonsocket, Eddy began his career in the fire service as a Junior Firefighter in Nasonville at the age of 16. He graduated from Burrillville High School in 1989 and would move up the ranks to take a leading role in the village fire department.
Eddy also worked for the Pascoag Fire Department, the Oakland Mapleville Fire Department, and the Harrisville Fire Department, where he was still an active member as a firefighter/EMT. He was a field supervisor and dispatcher for the MedTech ambulance company and a long time EMT instructor.
He also held a full-time job as a construction site EMT for Abbott Laboratories on the Groton Massachusetts project.
The Harrisville Fire Department announced the loss, noting Eddy was a dedicated member of the unit.
“We would like to wish Gus’s family and friends peace and love in these trying times,” the department noted.
Eddy was most recently a resident of Blackstone, Mass. and loved traveling, camping, watching football and hanging out with his friends, according to the obituary.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 10 a.m. at Cartier’s Funeral Home at 151 So. Main St. in Bellingham, Mass. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. John The Evangelist Church at 63 Church St. in Slatersville. Visiting hours are on Friday, March 6 from 5 to 7 p.m at the funeral home.
