
New recruits
The North Smithfield swore in two new hires swear at a ceremony at Town Hall on Friday, May 24, Patrolmen Jarod Tavares of Cumberland and Patrolmen Aaron Catarina of Millville, Mass. The ceremony was led by Chief Tim Lafferty and Town Administrator Paul Zwolenski.
Tavares, 25, served as a US Marine for four years from 2017-2021, with the highest rank of sergeant, and graduated from Saint Raphael Academy.
Catarina, 29, received a bachelor’s from Lasell University and an MBA from Southern New Hampshire University. He was born and raised in North Smithfield and graduated from North Smithfield High School.

Car cruise
Car cruises at The Beef Barn Restaurant continue this week, with the second of the season set to take place on Tuesday, June 4, from 3 to 8 p.m., on the grounds of the business at 200 Industrial Drive. The Car Cruise events will continue through the summer every Tuesday night, weather permitting.
Food trucks
Good Working at 585 Smithfield Road will host a business networking event on Wednesday, June 5 from 5 to 8 p.m., to coincide with the food truck events taking place just across the road from the shared workspace business. Guests are to connect with local professionals while relaxing in an outdoor setting with food, drinks and live music.
Trash answers
The town’s new trash service provider, Waste Management, will be at North Smithfield Middle School at 850 Providence Pike on Wednesday, June 5 for a question and answer session starting at 6 p.m. Residents are invited to attend to learn more about the new trash and recycling program that goes into effect on Monday, July 1.

The mystery book club at North Smithfield Library will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, June 12 to discuss “A Flicker in the Dark ” by Stacy Willingham. Shredding/E-waste
The North Smithfield Highway Department at 281 Quaker Highway will hold a shredding and e-waste collection event on Saturday, June 8, with shredding from 8 a.m. to noon, and e-waste accepted from 9 a.m. to noon. Residents can drop-off computers, TVs, monitors, printers, small household appliances, air conditioners, and more.

The North Smithfield Asset Management Commission will hold a meeting on Monday, June 3 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the North Smithfield Police Department at 575 Smithfield Road. The agenda is here.
