PROVIDENCE – The man charged with reckless driving in connection with a crash that left him hospitalized pleaded not guilty on Tuesday in district court.

Jake Surprenant, 30, of Burrillville was charged with reckless driving following the accident on Wallum Lake Road on Tuesday, April 8.

According to police, Surprenant lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway, striking a telephone pole and splitting it in half. His truck rolled over, striking a storage box on a resident’s front lawn and finally came to a halt wrapped around a tree.

Emergency personnel used multiple Jaws of Life to extract Surprenant from his truck before he was transported via life flight to Rhode Island Hospital.

An investigation later revealed that he was driving 104-miles-per-hour on road with a limit of 40-miles-per-hour, according to police.

In court on Tuesday, May 6, he pleaded not guilty and was ordered not to drive, and to complete safety education classes through the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Surprenant was released on $1,000 personal recognizance and is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on Tuesday, May 27.
