New officer

The Glocester Police Department recently announced the addition of a new member, swearing in Officer Aaron Steere. Steere has more than 20 years of law enforcement experience and “a wealth of knowledge,” according to a note from the department.

“He’s a highly respected veteran in the field, and we’re thrilled to have him as part of the Glocester PD family,” the department noted.

Flood watch

In addition to a heat advisory in the area, in effect until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the region. Starting at 2 p.m., NWS notes that excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

Summer concert

The Glocester Recreation Department’s summer concert series continues this week, with Whiskey Road Band on Wednesday, July 9. The free shows take place every Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Kent Field Pavilion. Visitors are invited to bring blankets and chairs to enjoy the outdoor events.

Sip & Shop

The village of Chepachet’s Sunset Sip & Shop events will also continue this week, with guests are invited to stroll the area and explore merchants while enjoying complimentary beverages. The event will be held on Thursdays, July 10 and August 14, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Rock & Roll Book Group

The Glocester Manton Library will soon begin a new book discussion aimed at music lovers – the Rock & Roll Book Group – on Tuesday, July 22, at 6 p.m.

Gayle Wolstenholme, the library’s director, will lead the discussion of the club’s first selection, Just Kids by Patti Smith. Smith’s memoir opens with the death of artist Robert Mapplethorpe, a close friend of Smith and former lover, and recalls their relationship throughout the book.

Just Kids won the 2010 National Book Award for Nonfiction. Copies of the book are available at the Glocester Manton Library.

Register online for this program at the library’s website, www.glocesterlibraries.org  or phone the Glocester Manton Library at (401) 568-6077.

Place Branding Survey

We mentioned it once before, but the Glocester Economic Development Commission is asking for help in responses to a five-minute survey as part of their place branding effort. The survey will help the EDC better understand how Glocester is perceived and guide the effort to showcase what makes the community special.

Take the survey here.
