NORTH SMITHFIELD – Less than one month after the announcement that three year Principal Amy Burns would be leaving the district to take on a new job in the field of research, North Smithfield High School has a new leader.

On Tuesday, August 5, Supt. Michael St. Jean announced that Dan Geraghty has been hired to fill the role.

Geraghty, who until recently held the same job at Smithfield High School, earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology at Assumption University in 2007. He went on to receive a degree in education administration and certification as a school building leader in New York State from the College of St. Rose.

He began his career in education as a special education and mathematics teacher in New York City, and was eventually promoted to dean of students, peer collaborative teacher, and assistant principal. In Rhode Island, he lserved as the K-12 supervisor of mathematics for Providence Public Schools spent more than two years as assistant principal at Hope High School.

He took the position in Smithfield following the resignation of former principal Dan Kelley in 2024.

Burns announced in July that she would take on a new role with the Sargent Center in Warwick, and will work her last day at the North Smithfield school on Friday, August 8.

St. Jean said the district received multiple applications in a message to NSHS families this week, noting a committee conducted interviews before Geraghty was selected for the position.

“Mr. Geraghty impressed everyone with his experience, knowledge, and strong focus on student well-being and success,” St. Jean wrote. “I am confident Mr. Geraghty will continue to expand the excellent student-centered work and focus at North Smithfield High School.”
