GLOCESTER – A goat that held the public’s attention for nearly a month by eluding police was finally captured this week and had to be euthanized due to its injuries.

Glocester Police announced the news on social media, noting it was not the outcome the department had hoped for.

“We know many in our community have followed her story closely and were hopeful for a positive outcome,” the department noted. “Your compassion and support have been truly appreciated throughout this process.”

The goat, which was first spotted loose in September, had avoided several attempts at capture, leading police to post humorous updates including a “most wanted” poster last month. The department noted in late September that the goat had somehow broken into a home on Cooper Road – but was still able to get away after police arrived. Various residents reported spotting the animal in surrounding towns including Burrillville and Smithfield.

The chase finally came to an end on Thursday.

“Following her capture, she was evaluated and found to have sustained significant injuries, along with the effects of prolonged exposure to wildlife and the elements,” noted the department. “Despite the best efforts of all involved, the most humane decision was to allow her to be peacefully euthanized.”

“While this is not the outcome any of us had hoped for, we take comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering and is finally at peace,” they added.

The department thanked Animal Control Officer Jennifer Grundy and the officers involved in the chase as well as ACOs and officers from surrounding communities and Ocean State Equine Veterinary Hospital for evaluating the animal.

“We’re grateful she was finally brought to safety and can rest peacefully now,” they noted.
