Veterans Day, wine tasting & a rescheduled blessing: Seven things to know in North Smithfield this week

Veterans Day closures

Town Hall will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 11 to commemorate Veterans Day and there will be no trash or recycling pickup. Collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.

Ceremony

The LeClair Kozlik Logan Bassett VFW Post 6342 will hold its annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Tues., Nov. 11 at Scouters Hall at 13 Main St., Slatersville starting at 11 a.m.

The Scouts will participate with the veterans in the ceremony, along with local state and town officials. All veterans and town residents are invited to attend the ceremony, followed by a free collation.

Julie Tilley, a volunteer with the North Smithfield Heritage Association, started clearing trails last week along town’s new Tarkiln/Gold Conservation Area.

Murray visit

The North Smithfield Democratic Town Committee will host State Sen. Melissa Murray, a Democrat representing Woonsocket and North Smithfield for a Town Hall meeting in town on Thursday, Nov. 13.

Murray has represented District 24 in Rhode Island since 2018 and previously served two terms on the Woonsocket City Council. Since joining the state Senate, she has served as the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services, vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Education, and an active member of several other Senate committees. Her accomplishments include sponsoring legislation designed to cap the cost of insulin and diabetes testing supplies for Rhode Islanders living with diabetes; legislation which bans declawing cats in Rhode Island; legislation which prohibits medical debt from impacting Rhode Islanders’ credit scores, and more, according to the NSDTC. Murray’s visit will give resident an opportunity to hear more about the latest State House term, and what is coming up next year. 

“We are very excited to host Senator Murray”, said Paul Jones, chairman of the town committee. “She has a long history of working hard to pass bills which will genuinely help Rhode Islanders, and we are very proud that she is representing North Smithfield at the State House”.

Wine tasting

North Smithfield Liquor Warehouse at 900 Victory Highway will hold a Holiday Grand Wine Tasting on Friday, Nov. 14 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Enjoy light refreshments and speak with industry experts while you sample fine wines. The free event is open to the public.

Sen. Jessica de la Cruz spoke with students in the Civics Club at North Smithfield Middle School last week.

Rescheduled blessing

Slatersville Congregational Church will offer Blessing of the Animals on the common on Saturday, Nov. 15 starting at 10 a.m., an outdoor event open to the public and all kinds of animal companions.  Those interested are invited to show up in front of the church at 25 Green St.

The blessing was rescheduled from Saturday, Nov. 8 due to weather.

Holiday Shop

The North Smithfield Heritage Association will host a Holiday Shop at the Forestdale School at 190 School St. on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Get started on holiday shopping with NSHA merchandise including calendars, ornaments, birdhouses, puzzles, books, maps and throws.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Fire & Rescue Service Board of Directors will hold a meeting on Monday, Nov. 10 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the station at 1470 Providence Pike. The agenda is here.
