Scouts Craft Fair, tree lighting & Christmas animals: Six things to know in North Smithfield this week

Christmas Animals

North Smithfield Senior Services will host a program on the topic of Christmas animals on Wednesday, Dec. 3, with Jane Deming, a humane education specialist. The event is open to all seniors age 55 and older, and will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Scouter’s Hall at 13 Main St. The presentation will be followed by Christmas cookies and is sponsored by Animal Rescue Rhode Island.

Transcription

The North Smithfield Heritage Association, in conjunction with Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park, will conduct a Revolutionary War pension file transcription event on Wednesday, Dec. 3 starting at 6 p.m. at Heritage Hall at 101 Green St. The public is cordially invited to contribute to the transcription of handwritten records. Comprehensive instructions and guidance will be provided and attendees are asked to bring a laptop.

The event is open to all with no registration required.

The unions representing the North Smithfield Fire Department and North Smithfield Fire & Rescue Service put together a donation of pies, which were delivered to seniors last week.

Holiday Craft Fair

Scouts BSA Troop 438 North Smithfield will hold a Holiday Craft Fair on Saturday, Dec. 6 at Slatersville Congregational Church at 25 Green St. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature vendors, family-friendly activities, food and more, and will serve as a fundraiser for Troop 438 and 1139, as well as the church.

Yard waste

Yard waste will be picked up curbside throughout town on Saturday, Dec. 6. Accepted yard waste must be in brown, biodegradable lawn bags or loose in cans clearly marked. No plastic bags, trash, stones, or non-organic waste can be mixed in.

Yard waste is also accepted via drop off at the highway garage at 281 Quaker Highway on Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tree lighting

The town of North Smithfield’s annual tree lighting will take place on Sunday, Dec. 7 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the gazebo at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The event will include a visit from Santa, and will be followed by crafts, cookies, hot chocolate and photo opportunities inside Town Hall.
