Candlelight shopping kickoff, tree lighting & a wreath fundraiser: Seven things to know in Glocester this week

Storybook walk

The Glocester Recreation Department has set up a Holiday Storybook Walk, to be available along Putnam Pike through the end of December. The self-guided activity begins at the Kent Field Pavilion featuring the book: “The Littlest Elf” by Brandi Dougherty.

Wreath fundraiser

Glocester Manton Library at 1137 Putnam Pike now has holiday wreaths available through its annual fundraiser. Library staff requests a minimum $25 donation for the wreaths and is asking those able to consider donating a bit more this year.

Tree lighting

The Glocester Recreation Department will host the town’s annual tree lighting ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 4, with crafts and concessions starting at 5:30 p.m. and the tree to be lit at 6 p.m. at the Pavilion at Kent Field. The public is invited to enjoy free ornament crafts, hot chocolate, and cookies before Santa lights the tree.

The Glocester Business Association has hung wreaths along the Chepachet Village Bridge.

Candlelight shopping

Candlelight Shopping in Chepachet also kicks off on Thursday, Dec. 4, with visitors invited to enjoy a little Yankee hospitality as they stroll through the village. Shops will be decorated for the season and streets lit with vintage street lights while holiday music adds to the old-fashioned ambiance.

Take part in open mic Christmas caroling from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and check out the “Trees on Main,” with the chance to vote on your favorite tree outside the downtown businesses. A shuttle bus will run through Chepachet with more information found here.

The events will continue for the next two weeks with Candlelight Shopping on Thursdays Dec. 11 and 18.

Vendor fair

This week, Chepachet Union Church at 1138 Putnam Pike will host a vendor fair in conjunction with the Candlelight Shopping event. Shop unique gifts and handmade crafts inside the church’s Fellowship Hall.

The church will also offer dinner every Thursday during the events from 4:30-7:30 p.m. with roast chicken and pasta this week at a cost of $15 per person. Money from the meals will supports the church’s food pantry.

Bingo

Chepachet Grange at 28 Chopmist Hill Road will host Bingo on Friday, Dec. 5 with doors at 5 p.m. and games to start at 6 p.m. There will be food for sale and a ten pack of six cards available for $10. This week’s event will also include an ugly sweater contest, and serve as a canned good and toy collection.

Town meetings

The Glocester School Committee meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 2 has been cancelled as has the gathering of the Foster-Glocester Regional board. Both meetings have been postponed to Tuesday, Dec. 9.

The West Glocester Fire District Executive Board will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 2 starting at 5:30 p.m. at 2410 Putnam Pike. The agenda is here.

The Glocester Planning Board will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 2 starting at 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike. The agenda is here.

The Glocester Economic Development Commission is expected to hold a meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 3 starting at 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike. The agenda had not yet been posted on the Secretary of State’s website as of Tuesday.

The Glocester Town Council is scheduled to hold a meeting on Thursday, Dec. 4 starting at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike. The agenda is expected to be posted on the Secretary of State”s website 48 hours in advance.
