NORTH SMITHFIELD – After killing one man and grievously injuring another in a 2023 hit-and-run, the North Smithfield man intoxicated behind the wheel that day will serve 17 years in prison, Attorney General Peter Neronha announced.

Nicholas Stone, 27, was sentenced during a hearing before Superior Court Justice Jeffrey Lanphear to 25 years in all, with 17 to serve at the Adult Correctional Institutions, followed by 25 years probation, with an eight-year license suspension upon release, 60 hours of community service, substance abuse counseling and $6,100 in fines, according to Neronha’s office.

Lanphear imposed the sentenced on Wednesday, Feb. 18 after Stone pled no contest to driving to endanger resulting in death; driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury; leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death; one count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury; leaving the scene of an accident resulting in damage to a vehicle; felony reckless driving; and driving under the influence.

Thomas Lamoureux, 63, was killed in the crash and 36-year-old Jeremy Davis was seriously injured, leaving him with lifelong injuries, according to Neronha.

“Because of this defendant’s reckless actions, one man died and another suffered permanent injuries,” Neronha said in a statement.  “Driving under the influence is an infuriating crime because every instance is entirely preventable, and so often it leads to severe injury or death, both of which occurred here. While I’m grateful that this defendant will pay significantly for his crimes, nothing can undo the harm caused to the victims and their families. I hope they now feel some sense of closure.”

While the charges against Stone were pending, he was arrested again, in mid-2025, for possession of child pornography. At the time, he gave authorities a home address of Thomas Street in Woonsocket, but he was reportedly living on Black Plain Road when he caused the multiple-victim hit-and-run.

Had the crash case gone to trial, the state was ready to prove that Stone was driving drunk when he killed Lamoureux and maimed Davis.

According to Neronha, on Oct. 25, 2023, at about 9:40 p.m., members of the Rhode Island State Police found the victims after receiving multiple reports of a hit-and-run crash on Route 146 north near the intersection of Sayles Hill Road. Lamoureux was pronounced dead at the scene, while emergency medical personnel transported Davis to Rhode Island Hospital.

Just over two hours earlier, the defendant had purchased nine nips of hard liquor from Washington Hill Liquors in Lincoln. Then, about 20 minutes before the hit-and-run was reported, he returned to the package store to purchase nine more nips, plus a 40-ounce can of Budweiser.

Stone subsequently drove his gray BMW sedan northbound on Route 146, striking Davis with the passenger side front bumper. He then struck Lamoureux, carrying his body on the hood of the BMW for approximately 600 feet.

As he sped away, Stone sideswiped a RIPTA passenger van before fleeing to the parking lot of Walmart in North Smithfield. While parked outside the Dowling Village store, Stone called his mother and confessed to his crimes. It was she who called 911 to provide authorities with her son’s location.

When troopers arrived on scene, they observed Stone’s 2011 BMW 328i with heavy damage to the hood, front windshield, roof, rear windshield and driver-side of the motor vehicle. Police attempted to conduct field sobriety tests, but the defendant refused and requested an ambulance, which transported him to Landmark Medical Center.

At the hospital, the defendant refused to submit to a chemical test. Armed with a search warrant, police later drew a sample of his blood, which showed his BAC, or blood alcohol concentration, was .161, or more than twice the legal limit. This was about 90 minutes after the crash, according to Neronha.

According to the judiciary’s web site, the charge of possession of child pornography lodged against Stone by the RISP in July 2025 is still pending.
