Ice harvesting
On Saturday, Feb 28 starting at 2 p.m., the Burrillville Historical & Preservation Society will hold a presentation on harvesting ice on lakes and ponds in town. A variety of ice-cutting tools will be on display at the Bridgeton School at 16 Laurel Hill Ave. from the collection of Ken Hopkins of Mapleville.
“In the days before modern refrigeration, it was necessary to cut and store ice to preserve food and to have cold drinks,” noted a release on the event.
Guests will learn how our ancestors worked in the ice-cutting business: how they harvested ice, stored ice in ice houses, and delivered ice to customers. The program will be presented by Betty Mencucci.
Anyone with old photos showing men harvesting ice in Burrillville or with general questions is asked to call (401) 568-8449 or (401) 500-0433. Refreshments will be provided.
