NORTH SMITHFIELD – An alleged shoplifter and her partner in crime are facing shoplifting and conspiracy charges despite one Cranston woman’s attempt to allude police by giving them a fake name.

Dennis Arcand, 38, of Bellingham, Mass. and Liese Marshall, 32, of Cranston face the misdemeanor charges following the incident on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Marshall was also charged with obstructing an officer and taken in on four warrants out of other jurisdictions.

According to the arrest reports, police were called to Walmart around 7:30 p.m. for reports of a man and a woman taking items. The pair reportedly fled the store with Arcand running toward Aldi.

Police caught up with Walmart security, who was following Arcand as he headed through the PetSmart property and toward the wood line. When officers ordered him to stop, Arcand reportedly fell in the snow, and then began yelling at the Walmart employee, saying he had been chased for no reason and was almost hit by the security SUV.

Marshall was also caught, but told police she had no identification. Officers note she provided a name, but did not know how old she was or her social security number.

Dispatch sent a photo of the individual whose name had been given but the person reportedly “looked noting like the suspect” and had a different hair color and eye color.

According to police, Marshall continued to lie about her identity and said “she’d been doing drugs for quite some time and that’s why she looked different now.”

She finally came clean when officers said they’d identify her during fingerprinting, saying she had used the alternate name in the past and had gotten away with it.

Marshall had a warrants for shoplifting and conspiracy out of both Lincoln and Smithfield, and has since been ordered to pay restitution to all three stores. She pled no contest to the North Smithfield charges and was sentenced to 60 days with ten months suspended and ten months probation.

Marshall still has two open cases out of Woonsocket, for charges including assault on a healthcare provider, fraudulent use of a credit card, receiving stolen goods and resisting arrest according to the state criminal database.

Arcand did not show up for his initial court date and a warrant was issued. He was held without bail following a walk in warrant on Feb. 17 and is due in court for an arraignment March 3.
