BURRILLVILLE – After just two years serving as president of Ohio State University, Burrillville native Ted Carter resigned this week, admitting he had an inappropriate relationship with a woman who wanted to use public resources for the benefit of a personal business.

Carter, whose name was added to the Burrillville High School gymnasium in 2023, was under a five year contract with the school, set to expire in 2028. The Ohio State University Board of Trustees accepted the resignation in a letter penned on Sunday, March 8.

Born in Pascoag, Carter graduated from BHS in 1977 and went on to join the U.S. Naval Academy. He served 38 years in the U.S. Navy and was named a Top Gun pilot.

Carter would later serve as the Naval Academy’s 62nd Superintendent, and then as president of the University of Nebraska. His past honors include the academy’s Distinguished Graduate Award, and induction to both Rhode Island Aviation Hall of Fame and the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame .

Just last month, NRI NOW reported that Carter, now 66, had received the Naval War College Foundation’s highest honor, the Sentinel of the Sea Award.

According to reports in The Columbus Dispatch, an anonymous source tipped off OSU’s Board of Trustees about Carter’s relationship.

He had received two raises over his short time leading the college, including a 4.5 percent last August, which brought Carter’s base salary up to $1,189,733, with the possibility of a $398,475 bonus.

The board has reportedly stated the issue involved an “inappropriate relationship with someone seeking state resources to support her personal business.”

“The board was surprised and disappointed to learn of the matter and takes the situation and its potential impact on the university very seriously,” noted Chairman John Zeiger in a letter accepting the resignation.

The Dispatch noted that JobsOhio, an economic development firm, sponsored a podcast that may be at the root of the resignation. Carter was allegedly involved with Krisanthe Vlachos, host of “The Callout” a podcast focused on veterans’ issues.

Carter said in a statement that he and his wife Lynda were leaving Ohio State with “gratitude and appreciation for this wonderful community.

  1. I do hope that they remove Donald Trump’s name from The Kennedy Center not to mention all the other buildings and monuments he wants to have his name placed on. A total disgrace to America.
