Spring sports, Easter services, Open Skate & a robotics win: Six things to know in North Smithfield this week

Tennis & Pickleball

The North Smithfield Parks & Recreation Department has announced that signups are now open for sessions of adult tennis and pickleball scheduled to take over the next few months.

Tennis will be held on Saturdays starting April 18 through May 23 with Coach Diana Adamcyyk, with beginners from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. and advanced beginners from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at the North Smithfield High School tennis courts. The cost is $100 per person for six weeks and registration can be found here.

Pickleball will take place on Sundays April 19 and 26; May 3, 17 and 31; and June 7 from 4 to 6 p.m., with all levels welcome for one hour drilling and one hour of match play. The cost for six weeks is $120 and registration can be found here.

Easter services

Slatersville Congregational Church at 25 Green St. will celebrate Maundy Thursday, April 2 with a simple supper at 6:30 p.m. and a Tenebrae Service at 7:30 p.m.

A sensory friendly Easter service will be held on Saturday, April 4 starting at 5 p.m., followed by a common meal and sensory-friendly egg hunt.

On Easter Sunday, April 5, the church will host a sunrise service at 6:15 a.m. and Eagle Point Worship at 10 a.m.

Open skate night

The town of North Smithfield will have an Open Skate Night in Burrillville on Saturday, April 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Levy Ice Rink at 425 East Ave. Admission will cost $10 per person with limited skate rentals available for an additional $5. There will be music and a concession stand available with all ages allowed to skate. Children under age 12 need to be accompanied by an adult.

Candidate speed dating

The North Smithfield Democratic Town Committee will hold Candidate Speed Dating on Saturday, April 11 starting at 2:30 p.m. – a chance for for focused, fast-paced conversations with candidates running for office.

“Move beyond the soundbites and connect with your future representatives on a deeper level,” notes the organizer. “Just like traditional speed dating, you’ll have a set amount of time to sit down one-on-one or in small groups with each candidate to ask the questions that matter most to you.”

The event will be held at The Village Haven at 90 School St. starting at 2:30 p.m. Tickets cost $30 and can be purchased here.

Robotics win

Congratulations to the North Smithfield High School’s robotics team, the Voltage Vikings, for their third place finish at the FIRST Robotics Competition. The team facied a highly competitive field of more than 30 talented high schools from across the New England area, according to school officials.

The district recognized the Senior members, noting their leadership and hard work were instrumental to the team’s success: Sophia Colucci; Noah McCall; Chris Lagasse; Aayan Khan; Grady Bibeault and Logan Pereira.

“The Voltage Vikings have showcased the excellence of our school’s Technology & STEM program,” the district noted of the win. “Congratulations once again to the entire robotics team on a truly superior result and unforgettable season.”

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Personnel Board will hold a meeting on Tuesday, March 31 starting at 11 a.m. at the police station at 575 Smithfield Road. The agenda is here.
