Myths & Legends

The Burrillville 250 Commission will hold another talk in their history lecture series this week, this time covering the topic of “Myths and Legends of Burrillville.” The lecture will be presented by Betty Mencucci at the Jesse M. Smith Library at 100 Tinkham Lane on Tuesday, March 31 starting at 6 p.m.

Learn the story of a privateer that once lived in Burrillville who captured prizes during the American Revolution, along with the bizarre story of a creature called the “panther” that allegedly stalked the woods in Burrillville and created fear in all those who ventured in.  There’s also the story of a former slave who had met President Abraham Lincoln, a circus giant who fought in the Civil War, a gang of counterfeiters in the Buck Hill Woods and a double murder that took place in the Horsehead Woods. A recent myth is the story of the “Conjuring House” on Round Top Road, which has caused vandalism to an innocent woman’s headstone and has raised the value of a 1700s farmhouse to over $1 million.

The event is free and open to the public.

No school Broncos

Burrillville Public Schools will have no school on Friday, April 3 in celebration of Good Friday. There is no change to the town’s trash or recycling collection during Easter week.

Game night

The Burrillville Prevention Action Coalition will host a game night on Friday, April 3, with electronic and board games for kids in grades 6-12 with One Up Games from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wallace F. Lees Public Safety Complex at 1477 Victory Highway. The fun will include pizza, lemonade and more.

Easter goodies

You may have already seen them out and about: The Burrillville Kindness Rock group once again made Easter buckets and gift bags to pass out randomly in the area. The group started passing them out last week and did a big gifting journey over the weekend, thanks to donations.

A total of 55 Easter gifts were created to hand out locally, along with 35 gifts for the Hasbro oncology and Tomorrow Fund units, to be given out, along with rocks and cards to Roger Williams Cancer Center. Kindergarten and 1st grade students at Levy Elementary School made cards to be delivered to the hospitals.

Baseball booster

The Burrillville Baseball Booster Club will host a Funny 4 Funds event featuring local comedians on Saturday, April 11 at Wallum Lake Rod & Gun Club at 200 Brook Road, with doors at 6 p.m. and a show to start at 7:30 p.m. The 18 plus event will feature raffles, a 50/50 drawing and a cash bar, with food trucks on site and snacks available for purchase.
