BURRILLVILLE – A single car crash on Douglas Pike in the early morning on Saturday, Jan. 26 took the life of a 23-year-old North Carolina man.

According to police, Payden Derossi of Leland, North Carolina was traveling southbound, and lost control of his car while attempting to pass another vehicle.

The accident took place in the area of Colonial Kennels around 4 a.m. Officers say they discovered a single vehicle off the road with “catastrophic” damage.

Derossi’s car reportedly left the roadway, striking several trees. By the time the car came to rest in the parking lot of the kennel, it was split into several pieces, according to police.

The investigation showed that excessive speed was a factor.

Rhode Island State Police, the Oakland Mapleville Fire Department, Pascoag Fire Department and the Rhode Island Medical Examiner’s office assisted Burrillville Police at the scene and in the follow-up investigation.
