Welcome to Rhode Side Sports NOW with Joe, a new feature on NRI NOW.
Each Friday, Joe Gallant will highlight standings from the week, and the teams to watch in Northern Rhode Island.
Stop back later this week for another new weekly feature by our local sports guru, an opinion piece where Gallant takes on national topics.
This week, Joe looks at boys’ hockey, where two local teams have wins in their division.
Division 2- Northmen bounce back
North Smithfield played well but the team was unlucky, losing 3-1 at home to Rogers/Middletown/Rocky Hill Co-Op Saturday, Jan. 18, and two in a row on the road, Cumberland 3-2 on Sunday, Jan. 19, and Coventry 4-1 on Friday, Jan. 24.
But on Saturday, Jan. 25, the Northmen grabbed a 4-1 win at home over Portsmouth after three straight losses.
The 4-5-1 Northmen look to keep it going this Saturday, Feb.1, on the road vs PCD/St. Rays/ Wheeler Co-Op. They will be at it again Monday Non-League on the road to take on Foxborough, in a late afternoon match-up.
Division 1- Broncos on a sizzling three-game winning streak
After back to back 5-0 losses to Mount St. Charles Jan. 11 and LaSalle Jan. 17, the Broncos won their third straight game last night at Levy Rink. The Broncos were impressive doubling up Moses Brown/East Providence/Tolman Co-Op 6-3.
Burrillville has now won three in a row after bettering Barrington 2-1 in O.T. at Levy Rink on Friday, Jan. 24, and securing a win 5-3 on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at Levy over East Greenwich.
The Broncos record is 4-4-1 as the team looks to extend the winning streak on the road against formidable Bishop Hendricken on Friday, Jan. 31.
