Rhode Side Sports NOW: COVID 19 brings sports world to a screeching halt

It’s an unsure time across the globe, including the sports world.

In our weekly feature, Rhode Side Sports NOW with Joe, local sports guru Joe Gallant typically takes a look at a week in northern Rhode Island high school sports.

This week, there’s only one thing to look at.

The Coronavirus has led to the suspension of major professional sports all over the world, as well as here locally in Rhode Island.

State Championship games have been put on hold, Celtics and Bruins seasons may or may not resume from suspension. MLB has announced that the beginning of the season will be delayed. Also, the PGA has postponed the Masters and NASCAR has suspended its action for at least the next two races. The NFL has yet to delay its Free Agency period and the start of league year, but that seems likely by the events of the last 72 hours.

All games pertaining to northern Rhode Island were initially scheduled to be played without fans, but were later postponed.

Gallant will continue to keep an eye on the local and national sports scene, and will keep readers updated when games resume.
