NORTH SMITHFIELD – A Woonsocket woman is facing several charges including felony cruelty or neglect after attacking her ex-boyfriend in the parking lot of the Dowling Village Walmart this month.
Brittany Mitchell, 27, of Woonsocket, was arrested on Wednesday, Aug. 5 and charged with domestic violence, domestic vandalism and disorderly conduct in addition to charges related to her child with the man she attacked.
According to the arrest report, police met with the victim and his new girlfriend, who said they were walking out of the store when they heard Mitchell screaming and saw her running toward them carrying the baby. Mitchell then began pushing the victim, hitting him and grabbing at his face while he tried to put groceries in the car, all while holding the child.
The victim said Mitchell then put the baby down in her car and grabbed a baseball bat from the vehicle, striking his car with the bat, causing damage to the driver’s side fender, front door and rear door.
A member of the store’s security team told police he witnessed the incident and tried to stop the attack before Mitchell left the scene. Police also obtained the store’s security footage which corroborated the story, showing the victim trying to back away while being hit.
DCYF was contacted and informed of the incident.
Mitchell reportedly turned herself in at the North Smithfield Police station on a warrant from the attack the following day.
Update: The felony cruelty/neglect charges against Mitchell have been dropped and she has a pretrial conference for the remaining charges scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26.
