Paint night, Clean & Green announcement: Five things to know in North Smithfield this week

Betty White Challenge

The Friends of North Smithfield Animal Shelter announced this week that the shelter is participating in the #BettyWhiteChallenge, an international movement that has increased donations to animal welfare facilities in honor of the late actress.

The Friends are encouraging residents to consider making a tax deductible donation to their organization, noting that 100 of funds received goes to the care of animals. Donations can be mailed to Friends of North Smithfield Animal Shelter, PO Box 653, Slatersville, RI 02876.

Clean & Green Day announced

Organizers have announced the date for North Smithfield’s annual Clean & Green Day, where volunteers traditionally pick us litter across town in honor of Earth Day. The event was held in fall in 2021 due to pandemic concerns, but will return to its normal spring schedule this year.

In 2022, the event has been scheduled for the day after Earth Day on Saturday, April 23. Follow North Smithfield, RI Clean & Green on Facebook to see more information and sign up links once they go live.

End of Heaven, II

The next screening from the docu-series, Slatersville America’s First Mill Village, “The End of Heaven, Part 2,” has been scheduled for this week as part of the Museum of Work & Culture’s Virtual Valley Talk series.

The screening will take place Thursday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.  To register for the virtual event email [email protected].  

Paint night, karaoke

Local artist Angela Rondeau has announced that she has scheduled another Paint Night at Gator’s Pub, to be held Tuesday, Feb. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. No experience necessary to participate and the cost is $35. Once you’re done painting, stick around to sing. The restaurant has noted that, ‘Karaoke Jim,’ will be adding Tuesday nights to his Gator’s Pub roster with from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. starting Tuesday, Feb. 1.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Zoning Board will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Jan. 25 starting at 7 p.m. Members of the public can participate virtually, with the link and agenda found here.

The North Smithfield Town Council will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 83 Greene St. starting at 6:30 p.m. for a proposed amendment to the town’s Code of Ordinances. Member of the public can participate in person or via Zoom with an agenda and link found here.

The North Smithfield Town Council will hold another special meeting on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 83 Greene St. for second reading of the change and a public hearing. Participation is allowed in-person or via Zoom with the agenda and link found here.
