Books wanted

North Smithfield High School Senior Emma Harrop is seeking donations of new or lightly used baby and children’s books for her senior project, which will benefit Books Are Wings in Pawtucket. Books Are Wings is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to put books into the hands of children.

Books made for kids age infant to grade 5 can be dropped in collection boxes throughout town, including one located at North Smithfield Public Library.

Trash delay

The North Smithfield Public Works Department has announced that trash and recycling collection will be delayed this week. There will be no collection on Monday, Feb. 14 and collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week at request of the vendor following the winter storm.

Engage North Smithfield has announced that a kitchen medicine workshop will be held on Sunday, Feb 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fees for the event, with information about herbalism, will be on a sliding scale.

Food pantry needs beans, canned fruit

The North Smithfield Food Pantry has announced that food pick up dates will be held on Tuesdays, Feb. 15 and 22, and Saturdays, Feb. 19 and 26.

The food pantry is open to North Smithfield residents, and recipients must have a photo ID and a bill that confirms a North Smithfield address. Residents are eligible to receive food all four times on select dates each month at the Slatersville Congregational Church.

Due to the pandemic, the food is distributed through a drive through at the church. Visitors are asked to stay in their cars and line up on Green Street. Pantry volunteers are also asking clients to wear masks.

For the month of February the pantry is seeking donations of baked beans, jelly and canned fruit.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield School Committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 15 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the North Smithfield Middle School cafeteria, with participation also offered via Zoom. The agenda and link to attend can be found here.

The scheduled joint meeting between the North Smithfield School Committee and the the North Smithfield Town Council on Wednesday, Feb. 16 has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts. The meeting is expected to be rescheduled for the School Committee’s next regular meeting on the second Tuesday in March.

The North Smithfield Sewer Commission will hold a virtual meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 16 starting at 7 p.m. The agenda and a link to attend can be found here.
