BURRILLVILLE – A man caught on camera attempting to break into a Burrillville liquor store was arrested this month after his mother confirmed his identity to police.

Mathew Robbins, 36, of Warwick, was charged with attempted felony breaking and entering, and vandalism following the incident on Monday, Jan. 31.

According to police, the owner of Chum Spirits showed surveillance footage in which Robbins attempted to smash the front door and glass window of the Chapel Street business with a tire iron, causing the glass to shatter.

“Robbins failed to gain access after about thirty seconds of hitting and kicking the door,” notes the arrest report.

Robbins was known to police, who visited his home in Warwick, where his mother confirmed his identity through the footage.

Police obtained an arrest warrant and reportedly found a tire iron in the suspect’s vehicle on Tuesday, Feb. 1, and noted he was wearing the same clothes seen in the surveillance footage as he was taken into custody.

Robbins bail was set at $10,000 with surety and he was transported to the ACI. The state criminal database shows he is also facing charges for breaking and entering in Warwick.
