Student art exhibit, Little League tryouts: Five things to know in North Smithfield this week

The town held a free training seminar on Friday, March 4 at Town Hall covering the application of the life-saving drug Narcan with guest speaker Dr. Anita Jacobson from the University of Rhode Island. The 22 attendees on Friday each received one kit containing Narcan.

Art open house

The North Smithfield Public Art Advisory Committee is offering residents a chance to view some of the best work by the town’s young artists at an exhibit this Thursday at Town Hall in honor of Youth Art Month.

The exhibit, the latest in an ongoing effort to bring life and beauty to the building at 83 Greene St., will showcase creations of students in grades K-12 as chosen by their teachers.

On Thursday, March 10 organizers welcome members of the public to view the exhibit at an event from 4-6 p.m., which will include snacks and activities. The display will also remain on the walls of Town Hall all month.

Little league tryouts

North Smithfield Little League will be holding tryouts for baseball on Tuesday, March 8 and softball on Sunday, March 13 in the North Smithfield High School gymnasium. The league is open to boys and girls ages 5-14, and opening day will be Saturday, April 30.

Players must be registered to try out and should bring their own equipment and wear sneakers. Learn more and register here.

Town seeks administrative assistant

The town of North Smithfield has an immediate opening for a full-time administrative assistant to the town administrator. The position, which pays $23.43 per hour, comes with a 35 hour work week. North Smithfield Police Officer Emmanuel Avila competes in the U.S. Army Best Warrior Competition.

Drill Sergeant of the Year

Congratulations to North Smithfield Police Officer Emmanuel Avila, who earned 1st place in his brigade for Drill Sergeant of the Year and overall 3rd place at the 98th Division at the United States Army Reserve Best Warrior Competition. Avila competed in the week-long competition outside of his regular duties with NSPD during the week of January 26.

“Our department is very proud of Officer Avila,” noted NSPD.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Town Council will hold a regular meeting on Monday, March 7 starting at 6:45 p.m. in the council chambers at 83 Greene St. Participation will be in-person only, though the meeting will also be live-streamed on YouTube. The agenda and link to watch can be found here.

The North Smithfield Zoning Board will hold a meeting on Tuesday, March 8 starting at 7 p.m. That meeting will be held both remotely and in person at 83 Greene St., with the agenda and instructions to attend found here.

The North Smithfield Budget Committee will hold a meeting on Wednesday, March 9 starting at 6 p.m. at 83 Greene St. Participation will be in-person only, though the meeting will also be live-streamed. The agenda can be found here.
