Dorr anniversary, Memorial Day parade: Five things to know in Glocester this week

On Tuesday, May 17 members of the West Glocester Fire Department along with Smithfield Police Department came together at the Chepachet Grange for Community Recognition Awards, celebrating the accomplishments of outstanding citizens. 2022 Award Recipients included:Teacher of the Year Paula DiLuglio; Law Enforcement Officers of the Year Ryan Perry and K-9 Grace; Citizen of the Year Dr. Clifford Brown; Junior Firefighter of the Year Maria Smith; and Grangers of the Year Carol and Danielle Malo.

Candidate notice

The Glocester Town Clerk’s office is notifying potential candidates for town office that the filing period for declaration of candidacy is June 27, 28 and 29. In order to be eligible to file a declaration, you must be a registered voter and the final day to register in person is Friday, May 27, or the deadline to register online at  https://vote.sos.ri.gov/ is Monday, May 30. Register at Town Clerk’s office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m to 4:30 p.m, or print a voter registration form at https://vote.sos.ri.gov/ and mail it to Town Clerk’s Office, PO Box B, Chepachet, RI 02814 The registration must be received by deadline to be valid.

Golf Tournament

The Glocester Police IBPO has announced a charity golf tournament to be held Saturday, Sept. 3 at Crystal Lake Golf Club. Registration costs $125 and includes 18 holes of golf and a catered dinner. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Glocester Addiction Assistance Program. Tee sponsorships are also available.

Anniversary tour

The Glocester Heritage Society has announced an event to pay tribute to Thomas W. Dorr on the 180th anniversary of the Dorr Rebellion.

“The Peoples Party and T.W. Dorr believed in voting rights for all citizens over the age of 21,” noted a post. “Those beliefs led to the Dorr Rebellion in 1842.”

The public is invited to the historic Pettingill-Mason House for tours of the Dorr Rebellion Room highlighting the events that led to the rebellion on Saturday, June 11 at 1043 Putnam Pike in Chepachet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free parking is available at Acote’s Field, and the suggested tour donation is $10.

Memorial Day

The town of Glocester will host a Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony on Monday, May 30, starting at 10:30 a.m. with a parade through Chepachet Village. A memorial honoring fallen war vets will follow at Acote Hill Cemetery.

Town meetings

The Glocester Land Trust will hold a meeting on Tuesday, May 24 starting at 7 p.m. at Glocester Town Hall. The agenda is here.
