BURRILLVILLE – An auction held last month for the purpose of collecting funds from unpaid sewer and property tax bills brought in nearly $47,000.
Liens on 18 properties were placed up for tax sale, and only a few failed to attract bidders. Investors who buy the liens collect interest over the course of one year, at which time they have the opportunity to foreclose on the property via a petition in Superior Court if the debt has not been paid off.
The main purpose of the sales, held primarily by municipalities and fire districts throughout Rhode Island, is to prompt delinquent taxpayers to come forward. Legal ads listing the properties must be published 30 days in advance by state law, and 41 properties in Burrillville were originally headed to the auction, with more than half of the owners taking care of the bills in advance.
Those who failed to pay saw liens on their lots auctioned at an event held at The Assembly Theatre on Thursday, June 16.
One frequent bidder at the June sale was Cranston-based Roosevelt Associates RIGP, submitting the highest offers for claims to titles on five Burrillville properties totaling $17,281.
Property owners can now exercise their right to redemption – as one already has. Ischia Inc. paid past due taxes and fees on a property at 0 Wallum Lake Road just days after the tax sale.
Others will be on the hook to pay the liens and fees – plus interest – or risk losing the property.
