Birder visits Farmer’s Market
The Burrillville Land Trust has announced that expert birder Todd McLeish will be at the group’s table at the Burrillville Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Sept. 3. A Burrillville resident, McLeish has been watching birds, and writing about other wildlife and environmental issues for more than 25 years
At the farmers’ market, McLeish will answer questions and shed light on some of the most popular and charismatic birds observed in Burrillville’s backyards and all throughout Rhode Island and southern New England during a visit from 9:30 until 11 a.m. In more than 200 magazine and newspaper articles, McLeish has highlighted numerous threatened species, profiled biologists and wildlife artists, and described encounters with a wide variety of backyard creatures. He has written four books about natural history topics, including Return of the Sea Otter and Narwhals: Arctic Whales in a Melting World. The author will have books available for purchase and signing.
The farmers’ market is open from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays through September 24 at the Stillwater Mill Pavillon at 75 Tinkham Lane in Harrisville.
Rock of Ages
Swamp Meadow Community Theatre will present Rock of Ages- Youth Edition at the Assembly Theatre this week, with performances Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 2-4. Tickets cost $20; $15 for students and seniors; or are free for children age six and under, and can be purchased here.
Field Day & Muster
The Oakland Mapleville Fire Department’s Field Day & Muster returns on Sunday, Sept. 4 after a two-year hiatus. The 63rd annual event takes place on the corner of Victory Highway and Oakland School Street and the public is invited to visit and enjoy beer, clam cakes, chowder, fried dough and more while they watch the firefighters competition.
The event will begin with a parade starting at 11 a.m. at the Oakland Triangle with the muster immediately to follow. Support local firefighters while they compete for $1,000 in prizes.
Town meetings
The Oakland Mapleville Fire District will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, August 31 starting at 7 p.m. at the fire station at 46 Oakland School St. The agenda is here.
