NORTH SMITHFIELD – The driver of a vehicle that flipped over by Route 146 southbound Monday morning became trapped in the car, and had to be rescued and removed by emergency personnel.

North Smithfield Fire & Rescue Chief David Chartier said the Jaws of Life were used to extricate a 21-year-old Woonsocket man from a vehicle at the Sayles Hill Road entrance to Eddie Dowling Highway on Monday, Sept. 19.

The driver was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with a major right knee laceration and possible chest injuries.

Chartier noted the man, who collided with a guardrail causing the car to flip in the single-vehicle accident, was trapped in the car for around 30 minutes.

“He had to remove the roof of the car,” Chartier said. “His legs were pinned underneath the dashboard.”

Chartier said Woonsocket Ladder 1 also responded at the scene.

No one else was injured in the crash.
