Litter-free kickoff, new CERT class: Five things to know in North Smithfield this week

President’s Day

North Smithfield Town Hall will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20 to celebrate President’s Day, but it is not a trash holiday. Trash and recycling will be picked up in town on Monday, and will remain on the regular schedule for the remainder of the week.

Walk & Clean Up

Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful will kick off a new spring anti-litter walking initiative held in collaboration with Rhode Island First Lady Susan McKee this week with an event in North Smithfield to take place on Thursday, Feb. 23 starting at 1 p.m. The walk/clean-up route will be two miles long following the map hereand participants will get exercise while picking up any litter they see with grabbers. Walkers will meet at the Town Hall parking lot at 83 Greene St.

The walks will continue in the coming weeks, heading to all ten Rhode Island Blackstone Valley communities promoting, “Keep Rhody Litter Free,” an award-winning website encouraging residents to help clean up outdoor spaces and preserve natural heritage. Walks will last approximately an hour and weather delays will push the walk to Friday of the same week.

Hike Audobon

The North Smithfield Parks & Recreation Department’s hiking series continues on Saturday, Feb. 25, with a first guided tour of the Audubon Fort Wildlife Refuge, a 235-acre property the includes miles of paths leading to three idyllic ponds. The refuge is considered a destination for bird watching, with species of owl and warblers, as well as other wildlife observation and photography, with a diverse habitat teeming with beaver, otter, muskrat, fox, deer, frog and turtle in residence.

Hikers will meet at 9:30 a.m., with refuge explorers to gather at the property at 1445 Providence Pike.

New CERT class

North Smithfield Emergency Management has announced that a new nine-week Community Emergency Response Training class series will begin on Tuesday, April 11 and run through Tuesday, June 6. Participants will learn preparedness for hazards and disasters; basic first aid and medical ops; fire safety; search and rescue; and much more.

Classes will be held each Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. For more information contact instructor Capt.Jay Levenson at (401) 230 9327.

The North Smithfield School Committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 21 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the North Smithfield Middle School cafeteria at 1850 Providence Pike. The agenda is here.
