There are still spots remaining in a free self defense class offered by the North Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department that begins this evening, on Monday, March 13. The class, taught by Kodokai Martial Arts Dojo will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m, and is geared for middle and high school-aged students, with a second part to be held on Monday, March 20. A separate class geared for adults, as well as adults accompanied by a kid ages 12 and up, will be held on Mondays, March 27 and April 3.

To register for the free class, to be held at the dojo at 175 Eddie Dowling Highway, email [email protected]

Hydrant flushing

Hydrant flushing in the area of Mendon Road and St. Paul Street will take place on Thursday, March 16 beginning at 9 a.m. by Metro USA Fire Protection. Flushing can make the water appear temporarily rusty/brown because iron and mineral deposits in the water get stirred up. The North Smithfield Water Department advises residents that the water is still safe to use and consume during hydrant flushing, however, it may stain laundry. Anyone who experiences discoloration should run their cold water tap until the water becomes clear.

Hike Souza Farm

The recreation department will offer a guided hike of Booth Pond, Pine Hill and Souza Farm on Saturday, March 18 starting at with participants to meet at the Aldi’s parking lot at 9:30 a.m.

The guided hike is open to the public and expected to take from one and a half, to two hours to complete. Hikers are advised to wear long shirts, pants and hiking shoes, use insect repellent and bring a bottle of water.
