Tennis, garden & heritage talk: Five things to know in North Smithfield this week

Heritage night

Author Andrew Noone will give a heritage talk on Friday, May 19 discussing his book on Bathsheba Spooner, a woman from the elite of eighteenth-century New England society who conspired with American and British soldiers to murder her husband at the midpoint of the American Revolution. The event, sponsored by the North Smithfield Heritage Association, is open to the public and will take place at Heritage Hall at 101 Green St. starting at 7 p.m.

Plant sale

The North Smithfield Community Garden will host a plant sale on Saturday, May 20 starting at 10 a.m. at Halliwell Elementary School. Visit to check out the garden and meet with gardeners, and browse a wide selection of vegetable plants.

Pantry needs beans

The North Smithfield Food Pantry has announced that pick-up dates this month will be held on Saturdays, May 20 and 27 at 10 a.m. and Tuesdays, May 23 and 30 at 5:30 p.m.

The pantry is open to North Smithfield residents with a photo ID and a bill that confirms address, and located at Slatersville Congregational Church UCC on the Common.

For the month of May, the pantry is seeking donations of canned fruit, canned beans and canned chicken.

Tennis

Registration is now open for North Smithfield Parks & Recreation’s summer youth tennis clinics, to be held Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning July 6 and ending August 1. Sessions with Coaches Natalie O’Brien and Diana Adamczk will be held for students in grades 1 through 10 and cost $65, or can be paid by the class at a cost of $10.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Senior Citizen Advisory Committee will hold a meeting on Monday, May 15 starting at 9:30 at at the Lincoln Senior Center at 150 Jenkes Road. The agenda is here.
