WOONSOCKET – A city woman is held at the state prison after stealing a car from the parking lot of Waterview Apartments and later getting into a crash with it in North Smithfield, according to police reports.
Angela F. LaPlante, 34, of 337 Dulude Ave., is charged by the Woonsocket Police Department with larceny between $5,000 and $10,000. While details were not immediately available from the North Smithfield Police Department, Woonsocket police reports say she was ordered held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions after an appearance in Third District Court, Warwick, on NSPD charges of driving under the influence and failure to report an accident.
Laplante was on bail from at least two open cases of possession of narcotics – one originating in Woonsocket and the other in North Smithfield – when she allegedly committed the new offenses, according to the judiciary’s web site. She is at risk of facing additional charges as a violator as a result of her status.
The Woonsocket police sought an order to have Laplante transported from the ACI to appear in court on their theft charges on Friday, Jan. 5, but as of press time there was no record of the hearing.
According to police reports, the WPD brought the charges against Laplante after taking a complaint on Jan. 2 from a 59-year-old man who lives at Waterview Apartments, located at 300 Privilege St.
He told police LaPlante visited him at night on New Year’s Day and asked him for some money. He told Laplante that he did have any and couldn’t help her.
He said Laplante was upset as she left his apartment and he went to bed. The next morning, when he went to look for his car keys, he couldn’t find them, noticed that his car was missing from the parking lot and called the police, identifying Laplante as the likely suspect.
“The stolen vehicle was located this morning in North Smithfield after being involved in an accident,” Officer Justin Mowry reported on Jan. 2. “I received a report from NSPD in which it was confirmed that Angela LaPlante was operating the vehicle.”
