Bond information, Family Fun Day & clothing swap: Seven things to know in Glocester this week

Informational sessions on bond

The Glocester Police Department will be hosting more information sessions and tours of the station in advance of the $10.7M bond referendum that would fund updates to the public safety complex. 

“We appreciate the support of Governor McKee, Senator de la Cruz, and Representative Chippendale and their work to get this bond referendum on the ballot. Now it is our job to answer any questions our residents may have about the plans and our need for an updated facility,” said Chief Joseph DelPrete. “We’re fortunate to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to leverage significant federal funds to support our updated public safety facility and we want to make sure that Glocester’s residents have all the information they need as we ask them to support this bond referendum.”

Information sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, June 18 and Tuesday, June 25 starting at 6 p.m. at the Glocester Police Station at 162 Chopmist Hill Road.

In addition, the Glocester Town Council will hold a public hearing on the project, including a presentation by the architect, Saccoccio & Associates, on Thursday, June 20, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The special referendum election on the bond will be held on Tuesday, August 6 at the Glocester Senior Center, 1210 Putnam Pike from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Early voting will be from July 17 to August 5 at the Glocester Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mail ballot applications for August 6 Special Referendum are now available in the office of the Town Clerk, or on line at www.glocesterri.gov.

Clothing swap

Century 21 Limitless at 1160 Putnam Pike will hold a women and children’s clothing swap on June 18, 19, 20 and 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. and June 22 from 9 to 11 a.m. Visitors are invited to stop by the office and bring clothes, take clothes and make some new friends.

Witch dancers

The Southern New England Witch Dancers will hold their Summer Solstice Celebration on Wednesday, June 19 starting at 7 p.m. in Chepachet. Catch the witches in front of the Century 21 office at 1160 Putnam Pike.

Family Fun Day

The Glocester Business Association’s third annual Family Fun Day will be held at Mulberry Vineyards at 95 Pound Road on Sunday, June 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. The event will include fun for kids and adults with a bounce house and water slide, temporary tattoos, pony rides, a petting zoo, craft stations, yard games and more, with Barbara’s Quick Lunch on site. Donations will be collected for the Glocester Animal Shelter.

Beach closing

Marion Irons Beach in now closed indefinitely following the announcement last week that harmful algae blooms at Coomer Lake. The
Rhode Island Department of Health and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management have recommended that the public avoid contact with the lake after testing discovered the algae, which can produce toxins that can harm humans and animals.

Cancelled

Chepachet Union Church has announced that due to circumstance beyond control, the church’s annual Strawberry Supper has been cancelled. The event was originally scheduled for Saturday, June 22.

Town meetings

The Glocester School Committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, June 18 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike. The agenda is here.

The Glocester Planning Board meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, June 18 has been cancelled.
