McGee withdraws from administrator race in North Smithfield

NORTH SMITHFIELD – It was a briefly considered political campaign, and former town councilor Thomas McGee notes it was based upon good intentions.

McGee told NRI NOW this week that he won’t be running for the position of North Smithfield town administrator, noting he believes there are other good contenders in the race.

When he first declared candidacy at Town Hall last week, the position was slated to run uncontested, he said. Later in the week, Elizabeth Newberry and Scott Gibbs submitted forms declaring their intent to challenge incumbent Town Administrator Paul Zwolenski.

“I didn’t want it to be a one man race, so I jumped in,” McGee said. “There’s some good candidates in there now so there’s no need for me to be in it.”

McGee said he initially was going to wait until the candidates submitted their signed nomination papers to make sure it was safe to leave the race, but says he spoke to individuals running.

“When I found out they were definitely in and they’re serious, that’s when I decided to drop out,” he said.

A former town councilor and owner of a plumbing company, McGee noted that he currently spends half his time in the state of New Hampshire.

“I like having the freedom,” he said.

McGee said he won’t be making any endorsements and hopes to see a good race.

“They’re three good candidates,” he said of his would-have-been opponents, who now include Zwolenski, Elizabeth Newberry and Scott Gibbs.

Candidates must now pick up their nomination papers by Tuesday, July 2 and return the signed forms to the Board of Canvassers by Friday, July 12 to be eligible to appear on the ballot.

All 2024 political candidates who declare the intent to run in Burrillville, North Smithfield and Glocester are invited to send information announcing their campaign, as well as a total of three press releases/position statements leading up to the November election for publication to [email protected].

  1. Talk about not making any sense. None at all. Sorta like the recent Baldelli Hunt fake run.
Lives in NH half the time, so he would not have been dedicated here, and jumped in because he wanted to offer a challenge to existing TA. Wasted time. And so not the reasons I bet…..but who cares, enjoy NH! Not our business. Gorgeous expensive NH. You only live once!
