NORTH SMITHFIELD – A Woonsocket man is facing child endangerment charges after police responding to an accident on Greenville Road say they found an intoxicated driver.
Joseph Coccia, 32, of Woonsocket was also charged with driving under the influence – .10-.15 – 1st offense – following the incident on Tuesday, June 25.
According to police, North Smithfield officers responded to a one car motor vehicle accident on the road in the area of Providence Pike and found Coccia, the driver, along with a 9-year-old passenger. Both were reportedly uninjured, but North Smithfield Fire & Rescue responded due to airbag deployment.
While investigating, police say Coccia displayed signs of alcohol intoxication and made admissions to consuming alcohol. Officers conducted a series of field sobriety tests in which Coccia reportedly demonstrated signs of intoxication. On scene, he submitted to a breathalyzer test, which showed a .145 blood alcohol content.
Coccia was arrested, and at the station he submitted to two more tests, which resulted in .134 and .135 BAC results.
Coccia was summonsed, released and arraigned on Tuesday, July 9. He is due back in court on October 21.
Coccia was also issued traffic summons for leaving the scene of an accident and laned roadway violations. His Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal court date is scheduled for Thursday, July 25.
