Mystery auditions, cooling center & Family Fun: Seven things to know in Burrillville this week

Cool off

Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Gingell has announced that those in need of a place to cool off amid this week’s scorching temperatures can visit Jesse Smith Library at 100 Tinkham Lane. The library will be open to anyone looking for a break from the heat Monday through Wednesday, July 15 through 17, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for northern Rhode Island, with a heat index of up to 103 degrees expected. NWS warns that hot temperatures and high humidity can cause heat illnesses, and locals are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Audition

Assembly ACT, the Assembly Theatre’s in-house company, will hold auditions for a mystery show on Monday, July 15. The entire production, from casting to performance, will last just 24 hours for the as yet unknown stage play. Auditions will be held by appointment at the Legion Hall next to Burrillville Town Hall on July 15 starting at 6:30 p.m. The casting for the show will be 18 and over. Yoga/Open Mic

First Universalist Church at 134 Harrisville Main St. is offering yoga in the church on Monday, July 15 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., a gentle flow class appropriate for beginners or those who have more experience. Pre-registration is required by sending a message on social media or emailing [email protected] and space is limited. Participants will need to bring their own mat for the free class and arrive 10-15 minutes early. Donations for the church are welcome.

On Tuesday, July 16, open mic night continues at the church from 7 – 9 p.m. The event serves as an opportunity to spotlight local talent and connect the church within the local community. Musicians and poets are invited share songs and/or poems in front of an audience. All are welcome to share their talents or just enjoy the evening’s entertainment.

Those who wish to perform are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the event to sign up. Open mic participants will have ten minutes or two songs, five minutes or two poems. If the the list is completed early, participants will be invited to a lightning round and go around again. The event is free and donations are welcome to support the preservation efforts of this historic church.

The open mic will continue as a monthly event on the third Tuesday of each month. For more information contact Jan Luby at [email protected].

Lunch applications

Applications are now open for free and reduced price meals for kids during the school year and parents who made need help applying can get some in Burrillville this week. Visit Jesse Smith Library at 100 Tinkham Lane on Tuesday, July 16 from 10 a.m. to noon for assistance. Additional event will be held at the library on August 29 and September 5.

Family Fun

Family Fun Fridays have returned for the month of July to Spring Lake Beach at 50 Old Hillside Drive, with special events offering games, crafts, prizes and fun for everyone in your tribe. The Friday fun starts at 5:30 p.m. and the water remains open late on the select nights. This Friday, July 19, the family fun theme is Christmas in July. All activities are included with regular beach admission.

Concert

The next free concert in the Riverwalk Times Concert series will be a performance by The Aviators on Saturday, July 20 at the Stillwater Mill Pavilion on Tinkham The concert runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and Dinolicious food truck will be on site.

Town meetings

The Burrillville 250 Commission will hold a meeting on Monday, July 15 starting at 7 p.m. at the Lees Public Safety Complex at 1477 Victory Highway. The agenda is here.
