Sports Camp, Whiskey Road Band: Six things to know in Glocester this week

Sports camp

It is not too late to join for kids to take part in Summer Sports Camp at Ponaganset Middle School, which is taking place this week from Monday, July 15 through Friday, July 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A one day drop off costs $50 and is open to kids in grades K through 7.

Hoops Camp, which will take place from August 5-9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., also accepts walk-in registrations on day 1 and is open to students in grades 1-9. The cost is $175 for the week.

Heat advisory

The Chepachet Fire Department is reminding residents to take extra precautions amid this week’s heat wave and remember to stay hydrated, take extra care of pets and look in on friends and neighbors. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for northern Rhode Island, with a heat index of up to 103 degrees expected. NWS warns that hot temperatures and high humidity can cause heat illnesses, and locals are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of the sun.

Nature bingo

Harmony Library at 195 Putnam Pike will offer Nature Bingo starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, open to children ages six and up. Registration is required by calling the library at (401) 949-2850, where kids will compete for prizes.

Concert

The Glocester Recreation Department’s summer concert series continues this week with a performance by Whiskey Road Band. The free concert will take place on Wednesday, July 17 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Kent Field Pavilion.

Storm damage

The Glocester Emergency Management Agency is asking residents whose homes sustained damage as the result of the wind and rain storm that went through Glocester from June 26-27 to send their name, address and phone number, along with a description of the type of damage and cost for repair in an email to [email protected]. The information will be used to submit a request for assistance to the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency. Those with damage should also submit a claim to their homeowner’s insurance.

Town meetings

The Board of Canvassers will hold a meeting on Tuesday, July 16 starting at 9 a.m. at Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike. The agenda is here.

The Glocester School Committee will not hold a meeting in Tuesday, July 16 as originally scheduled.

The Glocester Planning Board will not hold their meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, July 16.
