BURRILLVILLE – Two men who stole a vehicle from a home in Burrillville while intoxicated on July 4, and took it for a ride that reportedly included more alcoholic drinks – and a stop for fast food – are now facing multiple felonies.
Tyler Collard, 20, of Glocester, and Jacob Newsham, 20, of Scituate were both charged with larceny greater than $10,000, two counts of conspiracy, driving without consent of the owner and vandalism following the incident.
According to the arrest report, officers were called to a home on Whipple Avenue just after 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 4. The victim, a 66-year-old man, told police his car had been stolen and driven through a wooden gate at the end of his driveway. A wallet containing cash, he said, was stored inside the vehicle.
The car was recovered the following day at a home on Cooper Road in Glocester after a neighbor reported that it was parked there suspiciously. Items found inside that did not belong to the owner included a backpack, water, a sweatshirt and Gatorade bottles.
Meanwhile, the victim’s daughter, a 33-year-old Burrillville female, received a message from a stranger on social media who said she knew who had stolen the vehicle and provided details. The daughter brought the messages to police and a warrant was issued for both suspects.
Upon questioning, Collard told police he had been intoxicated and did not remember what he and his cousin Newsham had done. He said that Newsham stole the car from the driveway but that he immediately took over as driver because his cousin was too intoxicated. The pair took the car to Providence, where they stopped at McDonald’s, then spent time drinking and driving around the city according to Collard, before eventually returning to his grandmother’s house in Glocester.
Collard was released on $5,000 surety bond and is due back in court on Thursday, Oct. 17. His past record shows only motor vehicle offenses, including driving without insurance.
Newsham was released on a $3,000 surety bond and is also due back in court on Oct. 17. His previous criminal record includes domestic violence charges, still pending out of Scituate and a previous conviction for felony assault.
