Zoning workshop, Kickball & LMB: Eight things to know in North Smithfield this week

North Smithfield Professional Fire Fighters Local 3984 were outside Walmart over the weekend raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Water outage

The town is notifying residents of Lauren Wood that their water will be temporarily shut down on Tuesday, August 20 for approximately six hours beginning at 9 a.m. Water may show discoloration once it is turned back on and residents are instructed to run cold water until it clears.

Courts closed

The North Smithfield Parks & Recreation Department has closed the pickleball and tennis courts at North Smithfield High School for resurfacing. Courts will remain closed for renovation until further notice.

Zoning workshop

The Rhode Island Housing Municipal Technical Assistance Program will host a public workshop on Wednesday, August 21 to discuss updating of the town’s zoning and subdivision regulations. The public is invited to the informational session, to be held from 6 to 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St.

Freshman orientation

North Smithfield High School at 412 Greenville Road will hold freshman orientation on Thursday, August 22 from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. Incoming students and their families are invited to tour the school and meet staff. RSVP to attend the event here.

Kickball

Cub Scout Pack 7 Slatersville will host a kickball game on Thursday, August 22 starting at 6 p.m. at Pacheco Park. The event will be open to all children entering grades K-5 and their families, who are invited to learn more about what scouting has to offer. The rain date for the event is Friday, August 23.

Weekly summer events

Summer Nights at Wright’s Dairy Farm at 200 Woonsocket Hill Road will continue this week, with an event to feature the farm’s ice cream, along with live music and made-to-order pizza. Visit the farm on on Saturday, August 24 for pizza and scoops from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Summer activities on the grounds of the Beef Barn Restaurant at 200 Industrial Drive also continue, with a car cruise scheduled for Tuesday, August 20 and yoga on Sunday, August 25. Grab an ice cream and check out modern and classic cars Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. or show up Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with a yoga mat, water, and $10.

The North Smithfield Parks & Recreation Department’s final free summer concert of the season will take place on Thursday, August 22 with a performance by The Live Music Band from 6-8 p.m. The concert will take place in the field by Town Hall at 83 Green St., and visitors are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Garden Open House

The Halliwell Community Garden will hold an Open House on Saturday, August 24 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The public is invited to tour the garden and learn how it is organized. Volunteers will be on hand to provide information on gardening methods and varieties that are grown. 

The Open House takes place at the garden which is on the grounds of former Halliwell Elementary School at 358 Victory Highway.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Town Council will hold a meeting on Monday, August 19 starting at 6:45 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield School Committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, August 20 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of North Smithfield Middle School at 1850 Providence Pike. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Sewer Commission will hold a meeting on Wednesday, August 21 starting at 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.
