New traffic signal, open house and turf field meeting: Eight things to know in Burrillville this week

Labor Day

Town Hall will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2 in celebration of Labor Day and there will be no trash or recycling pickup. Collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. Questions can be directed to the Department of Public Works Refuse & Recycling at (401) 568-4440 ext. 12.

Student update/Open House

Burrillville kindergarten students are invited with their families to meet their teachers with short visits on Tuesday, Sept. 3 and kindergarten students with last names beginning with A-L will begin school on Wednesday, Sept. 4, and last names beginning M-Z on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Preschool orientation will be on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and preschool students will start on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Burrillville Middle School will hold an Open House for students in grades 6-8 and their families on Thursday, Sept. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. School officials will hold a brief meeting in the auditorium followed by an opportunity to visit all of the classes on the student’s schedule.

New traffic signal

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has announced that starting on Friday, Sept. 6, a temporary traffic signal will be installed that will alternate traffic on Route 7, between Dion Drive and Reynolds Mill Street. The signal will allow for repair of a retaining wall, according to RIDOT, and will remain in place through the end of the year. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes.

Turf field meeting

The Burrillville Town Council is scheduled to hold a special meeting on Thursday, Sept. 5 starting at 6 p.m. to present information about the project to install an artificial turf field at Burrillville High School. Town officials note that the meeting is set to take place in the auditorium of BHS at 425 East Ave.

As of Monday, Sept. 2 an agenda for the meeting had not yet been posted on the Secretary of State’s website.

Lemonade fundraiser

A community event featuring raffles, activities and more, which raises thousands each year for the Burrillville Animal Shelter, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ben’s Annual Lemonade Stand will be held this year at the Burrillville Town Common at 105 Harrisville Main St. put on by Burrillville resident Benjamin St. Pierre, with 100 percent of proceeds donated to the facility. The rain date for the event is Sunday, Sept. 8.

Pizza making class

The Sticks Pizza Co. will host an interactive pizza-making class at Bravo Brewing Company at 75 Pascoag Main St. on Sunday, Sept. 8 starting at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $40 and can be purchased here.

Benefit

A benefit for Thom Gauthier will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Townsmen Club at () from 2 to 9 p.m. The event will include a pig roast, 50/50 raffle, music, cornhole and a horseshoe tournament. Tickets cost $25 and are available for purchase at Elayna’s, George’s Pizza and The Western Hotel.

Other town meetings

The Burrillville Board of Canvassers will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 3 starting at 10 a.m. in the town building at 105 Harrisville Main St. The agenda is here.

The Pascoag Fire District will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 4 starting at 7 p.m. at Station #2 at 141 Howard Ave. The agenda is here.

The Burrillville Affordable Housing Board will hold a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 5 starting at 2 p.m. in the town annex at 144 Harrisville Main St. The agenda is here.

  1. It’s very thoughtful of the R.I.D.O.T. to add yet another traffic inconvenience in the Town! You can bet your bottom dollar this wouldn’t happen in any of the MONEY towns else ware in the State!
