I am writing to express my support for two outstanding candidates running for the North Smithfield School Committee: Jean Meo and Chris Simpkins.
When a controversy that created negative attention arose in our small town years ago it reinforced to me how vital every individual voice is. I feel it’s a duty of all of us as residents to be engaged, pay close attention to local matters, speak out when necessary, and take a more active role in our community.
My connection to North Smithfield runs deep. I moved here at the age of 11, and my grandparents have lived in this town since the 1950s. Despite leaving at times, I always found my way back. When it came time to buy a home, we chose to purchase my grandparents’ house, knowing it was where we wanted to raise our family. A major factor in that decision was the strength of our school system.
As another controversy stirs in our town, we all have an obligation to actively engage and set a course for the future. I believe in addressing issues with kindness and facts, acknowledging opportunities to grow my understanding and striving to build up rather than tear down. I strongly encourage others to use their voices as well. I expect leaders to do the same.
First: Jean Meo. During the difficult years of COVID-19, I watched Jean guide our town with wisdom and compassion. As a parent of a school-aged child I was understandably anxious. However, as I watched the School Committee meetings, I felt reassured by Jean’s dedication to ensuring the safety of our students. Her calm demeanor, combined with her unwavering commitment to our children, was evident. Even in the face of public discourse she remained steadfast and resilient. Jean has consistently demonstrated her dedication to our community, whether through her volunteer work or her involvement in various local events. Her proven track record of putting the needs of our community first makes her an excellent choice for the School Committee.
Second: Chris Simpkins. When our community faced challenges, Chris stepped up in a way that was both unique and refreshing. Amidst the tensions and disagreements, Chris brought humor and positivity to his campaign, capturing our attention with his creative approach. He sought to unite rather than divide, offering a new perspective on how to engage with the community. Although I didn’t know Chris well before that campaign, I have since observed his continuous efforts to uplift and support our town. Chris, along with his family, is deeply involved in our community, and he leads with kindness, empathy, and a commitment to ensuring that every child has equal opportunities. His presence on the School Committee would be invaluable and my confidence is high that he will make thoughtful decisions on behalf of our children.
I urge my fellow residents to join me in voting for Jean Meo and Chris Simpkins this year. They are competent, passionate, and dedicated candidates.
Thank you,
Jen Tripp
Mary I will agree with you here. Both are solid human beings to be on our school committee. While I disagreed with the school’s approach to Covid, I understand people were acting with the information that they had at the time to protect our kids. The reality is some of the decisions actually caused more harm than protection of Covid with mental and emotional distress due to lockdowns and masks. I wonder if this happened again, would they / we make the same decisions….that being said, Jean, Chris and David De La Cruz are fine candidates for our school committee.
Jean and Chris have our votes and we are most thankful that they have chosen to run!
