Sunday cartoon: Bus stop kids cross streets safely

BURRILLVILLE – While driving across the area lately, I’ve notice quite a few kids running across streets without stopping and looking both ways first. They are usually running to to catch the school bus.

Kids always need to stop and look in both directions before crossing streets. They also need to cross streets at corners, and not midway to those street corners. Another pedestrian safety message would be for kids to not cross streets if blocked by big vehicles that removes them from plain view from approaching drivers. Kids should not cross streets at driver blind spots. Even a bend in the street could put a child in harm’s way if a driver does not see the child crossing the street as their vehicle approaches. Kids should find wide open areas at street corners without reduced visibility before crossing over to their bus stop.

The Bus Stop Kids want to remind kids and families about the important of pedestrian safety during the busy and hectic school season. If you are driver and you approach a child standing on a sidewalk, or on the side of the street, please come to a complete stop and allow that child to cross safely. Kids can avoid the hazards of running to the bus stop if they leave their residence a few minutes earlier. Cchools are now open across the region, so please drive cautiously and be careful around busy school grounds. Watch for all of those Bus Stop Kids.
