Discovering mushrooms, fantasy book club: Six things to know in Glocester this week

Fantasy book club

Glocester Manton Public Library at 1137 Putnam Pike has announced a new fantasy book club to meet on the third Tuesday of every month. The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 15 starting at 6 p.m. for discussion of, “Book of Doors,” by Gareth Brown. The book is now available at the library’s circulation desk.

Discovering mushrooms

The Glocester Land Trust will host, “Discovering Mushrooms,” on Friday, Sept. 20 in celebration of Land Trust Days. Guests are invited to take a walk with the Rhode Island Mycological Society and Mushroom enthusiast Deana Thomas at Sprague Farm Forest at 162 Pine Orchard Road starting at 10 a.m. and discover the fungi that live in, and dine on, the woodland habitat. Participants are advised to bring a hand lens if they have one and consider downloading iNaturalist to cell phones to photograph and log fungal finds. 

Background checks

The Glocester Police Department has announced a temporary pause on civilian background check appointments until further notice. Those who need a background check are advised to visit the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office in Cranston and can find more information here.

GPD noted they are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Scout recruitment

Troop 101 Foster is hosting a Scout Recruitment Day on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature cornhole, archery, axe throwing, wood carving and more at the Woody Lowden Recreation Center at 16 Howard Hill Road. Visitors who sign up for scouting at the event will get $50 off.

Meat raffle

The Glocester Lions Club will host a meat raffle on Sunday, Sept. 22 at Pinewood Pub & Pizza at 16 Terry Lane Visitors have access to a free buffet with the purchase of raffle tickets, which cost $30 for 26 chances or $60 for three sheets. Doors open at noon at the event with the raffles to start at 1 p.m.

Town meetings

The Glocester School Committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 17 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike. The agenda is here.

The Glocester Planning Board workshop originally scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 17 has been cancelled.

The Chepachet Fire District Executive Board will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 18 starting at 6 p.m. at the station at 1170 Putnam Pike. The agenda is here.

The Glocester Town Council is scheduled to hold a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 19 starting at 7:30 p.m. The agenda is expected to be published 48 hours in advance on the Secretary of State’s website here.
