NORTH SMITHFIELD – Beth Newberry, a candidate for the position of North Smithfield Town Administrator, pointed this week to the skills needed in order effectively take on the role.
“As a voter, I want my next town administrator to have a varied skill set and range of experience,” Newberry said. “The job requires a ‘political’ mindset not a technocrat, someone who leads in a collaborationist manner. The TA is a team leader, not just of professional employees but a varied set of other local elected officials, each of whom has their own visions, duties and powers.”
Newberry said that to be effective, the town administrator needs to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses, bringing others together to maximize everyone’s potential.
“I am not an expert in a narrow field, looking good on paper but representing only one of many possible skills,” said Newberry. “No one has every desired experience or is uniquely qualified for the job, but I bring a strong background in a range of fields. From running my own for-profit business, to having led large non-profit organizations, overseeing budgets and building teams, I have 30 years of demonstrated strengths and skills well suited to the role of being captain of a ship full of diverse crew who work best with a leader who respects everyone for what they bring to the table.”
“I respectfully ask for your vote this November,” she said.
