Coffee hour

Good working at 585 Smithfield Road will host a free Networking Coffee Hour on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 8 to 9 a.m. Join fellow professionals including freelancers, business owners and others looking to expand their network, and enjoy complimentary coffee while you connect and collaborate.

Meet the Candidates

Six of the ten candidates for North Smithfield Town Council will gather for a, “Meet the Candidates,” event, to be held on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Tavern 6 two 1 at 621 Pound Hill Road. The event is sponsored by new candidates Ann Lilley, David Punchak, Kevin Newton and Rebecca DeCristofaro, as well as incumbents Kim Alves and Doug Osier.

The public is invited to attend and learn more about their candidates for local office.

Soil testing

North Smithfield Public Library at 20 Main St. will provide a chance for visitors to ask master gardeners questions and have their soil samples tested before they put their gardens to bed on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is presented by University of Rhode Island Master Gardeners and visitors are asked to bring their own soil samples.

Open house

Saint Antoine Community will open their doors and welcome the public to their annual campus-wide Open House Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Family and friends that are interested in visiting Saint Antoine Community and hoping to learn more about their full continuum of care are welcome to tour both the Villa at Saint Antoine at 400 Mendon Road and Saint Antoine Residence at 10 Rhodes Ave. Guests will hear about the services available in assisted living, memory care assisted living, and short-term and long-term skilled care. They will also have the opportunity to meet the staff and to ask questions about the admissions process, long-term financial planning, and how to ease the transition from home into a long-term care community.

Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Celebrate seniors

Aging Well Inc. will celebrate National Senior Center Month this week with an event at the Beef Barn Restaurant at 200 Industrial Drive on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. The event will feature activities including Zumba, line dancing, corn hole and yard games, with music by DJ Fran Golombiewski. Aging Well member and North Smithfield senior age 60 and above are invited to attend.

The rain date for the event is Sunday, Sept. 29.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Personnel Board will hold a meeting on Monday, Sept. 23 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the North Smithfield police station at 575 Smithfield Road. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Historic District Commission will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Town Hall at 1 Main St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield School Committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of at North Smithfield Middle School at 1850 Providence Pike. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Sewer Commission will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 25 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.

    • Hi Karen.
      So that property is now owned by a developer and my understanding is that he said he was open to the idea of selling it to the town, but only if he could find another place in town appropriate for his housing project. Even if he has found a possible alternative, he would still need to negotiate a sale to the town, and any meetings of that nature would take place in executive (closed) session with the council. In this case, no news on the matter is probably not good news.

    • The developer was at the TC meeting last week. He was there with his attorneys and he wants to sell it to the town. I spoke with him and he informed me of the above. It would appear no decision was made.
