NORTH SMITHFIELD – Students at North Smithfield High School were told to shelter in place briefly Wednesday morning following a phone call to the main office that reportedly concerned school officials.
Supt. Michael St. Jean said on Thursday that he could not share details regarding the nature of the call, stating only that school took appropriate action.
The call that resulted in the decision to have students shelter in place reportedly came in around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
“This decision was made out of an abundance of caution to limit movement in the building while we investigated,” said Principal Amy Burns in an email following the incident to parents. “The situation has been resolved.”
St. Jean said that students were told to stay indoors, and not leave the building unless absolutely necessary, for less than ten minutes.
“The high school office received a call and followed established and practiced procedures,” he said. “At no time was anyone in any danger.”
Did NSMS have a shelter in place as well?
No. It was just the high school.
